In architecture there is a tendency to play with spaces and volumes. Regarding the spaces at the time of design our prefabricated house We think of two groups. The interior spaces and the exterior spaces. One of the first on the Blog we stopped not long ago at the kitchen design. Today we talk about spaces and we focus especially on outdoor spaces. With this entry we will define what space is in architecture and we will specify it in outdoor spaces.
What is space in Architecture
When we talk about space in general we talk about everything that surrounds us. This way we can talk about our geographical space. Like the one in which we develop as human beings. There will be a local space, the closest one that is limited in our scope of action. Our neighborhood, our urbanization or our town of residence. We will have another regional space which is the area where the town of our residence is located. This way we could cover more and more extension of the space that surrounds us.
In Architecture we refer to the spaces where we make our lives. In our specific case we are referring to those in our home. It is true that we also have spaces in our work environment. But we are interested in those in our homes. The architectural design tries to implement spaces with the necessary comforts for our daily lives. At the same time, it plays with maintaining that balance between the merely practical and the design. We will have functional spaces where we can carry out different activities.
Spaces in Architecture
As we pointed out at the beginning in Architecture we contemplate two different groups of spaces. The interior spaces, those that are delimited by the lines of facades, roof and interior partitions. The conditioning of this space is what is known as interior design. A branch of Architecture that today has great relevance. Houses not only have to be beautiful in their geometric lines, they must be furnished and decorated for that purpose.
The other group of spaces are the exterior spaces. These are spaces that in principle do not have all the limits of the previous ones. This usually means that the upper limit of the cover is missing. Sometimes lateral boundaries may even be missing. Another branch of Architecture is responsible for outdoor spaces. Exterior design or landscaping.
Limits in Architecture
To define the different spaces in Architecture we constantly refer to the limits. What types of limits are those? We are faced with two types of differentiated limits:
- the specific limits. This means that they can be touched, that is, they are real,
- and virtual limits. They cannot be perceived by touch. But they do have a division that separates them from other spaces.
In Architecture, spaces are classified by many more concepts. For example, because of the relationship that exists between their shape and circulation. Open spaces that flow into different planes. Even spaces that can vary in scale with the use of systems and elements that can modify it at will.
Outdoor spaces and their importance
Outdoor spaces have great importance in Architecture. This is true from the very moment that life does not only take place within four walls. When homes are located in natural environments, taking advantage of that environment is necessary. A space that can be used as a leisure and/or rest area. But also to give quality to the complete set. Depending on the possibilities, you can play with the connections between interior and exterior space. Also with the possibility of transformable spaces. That as soon as they are interior, they open enough to be exterior.
What elements can we use in outdoor spaces? Everything will depend on the use we want to give to each area. Surely we all think about swimming pools to be able to take advantage of the hot days. We must not stop thinking about garden areas. Plants and small shrubs can make it easier to enjoy outdoor spaces. AT the same time they can offer a leisure activity such as gardening.
